Linux : What can you expect?

Linux is an open source operating system developed and released under GNU General Public License. It’s mean that the source code or script will be available free for everyone. Initially, Linux is created by a young student as a hobby ( Linus Torvalds) at the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Apart from Linux is freely to distributed, Linux’s functionality, adaptability, stability and robustness, made Linux as the main alternative for proprietary UNIX and Microsoft Windows. Even Linux has been adopted worldwide primarily as a server platform.

Why Linux is better ?

1. Virus

  • Apparently, this is a bigger issue for me because you never heard that Linux will be attack by virus but you will see everyday from antivirus site announces new virus that will harm your windows.

2. Stability

  • Do you faces that your works lost because of windows crashed or hangs? But we have to admit that not every OS is 100% stable But if you install Linux, and then use your system as much as you want, leaving your computer on all the time, you can go on like that for years without having any trouble.

3. Software

  • Most important things after you finish install OS, you need word processing, graphics editing software that cost you $$, and so on if you using Windows. But with Linux, you can get free software without thinking about license.

4. Completely FREE

  • Yes, Linux is completely FREE. That’s right, all these guys all around the world worked very hard to make a neat, secure, efficient, good-looking system, and they are giving their work away for everybody to use freely. So why you thinking to pay $$ but you can it’s FREE.

There so many advantages when you use Linux as your operating system. But if your are hardcore gamers, you are addicted to propriety software or you work in printing/book industries so better you stick to Windows.

You also can try Linux without touching your windows. This is possible with “Linux live CDs”. A live CD works by :

  • Download a CD image from the web (this will be an .iso file, about 650 MB).
  • Burn it onto a blank CD.
  • Put the CD in your CD drive, and reboot.
  • Your computer will boot on the CD instead of booting on the hard drive (where Windows is), and will not touch anything : don’t worry about Windows and your data, they’ll still be there when you reboot again without the CD.
  • If your computer still boots Windows (the CD doesn’t seem to have any effect), then your BIOS configuration is faulty: you need to ask it to first scan the CD drive for an operating system, and then the hard drive. You can usually access the BIOS by typing “Del” or “F2″ while booting (if you don’t feel comfortable with this, get some help).
  • And now Linux runs on your system, you can test it and see how you like it! Don’t worry if the system seems a bit slow right now: it takes some time to load everything from the CD. Your Linux system will be much quicker once actually installed on your hard disk.

I’m also on journey to use Linux mainly ubuntu…. maybe after this I’m doing some research to install and use in my laptop,….

@Yoko — No need to wish to learn linux, did you wish to learn windows? I’ve converted some of my family and they all see how much easier Ubuntu Linux is for hardware, wireless networking, and launching applications.

This is a neat article, but there are actually some viruses for Linux/Unix, though extremely rare and rarely given permissions to change most things. It is mis leading to say that there are no viruses. In an ideal you would run clam av just in case.

Cause actually we are focus on windows and the users on windows are million or billion that’s why we heard about virus on windows not linux.
